Keep spiders at more than arms length as you humanely suck them up with these spider vacuums before depositing them outside.
If you find using a jar and cardboard to get rid of spiders puts you a little too close for comfort to your eight-legged foe, these spider vacuums could be the solution you are looking for and leave less mess on your carpet and walls than a well aimed shoe!
The concept behind the spider vacuum is to get the nozzle close enough to suck the offending creature into the main body of the device which seals them away. This allows you time to transport them to a safe (or not so safe!) place where you can drop them away from the house. Most spiders stumble into our homes by accident so hopefully that will be the last you see of any you catch.
Most common household vacuums won’t do the job as effectively. They are less agile and the spider can often crawl back out once the machine is off unless you empty the bag or cylinder immediately.
Benefits of a Spider Vacuum
1 The key benefit for the arachnophobe is the ability to suck them up from a safe distance. You can stand an arms length away plus the length of the vacuum which is usually anywhere from two to three feet in length.
2 Most spider vacuums on the market are humane. The spider is simply sucked up, hopefully unharmed, into the tube and then dropped off out of sight and mind outside the house. Those with a more brutal disposition towards these creatures can opt for a model with an inbuilt electrified grid which zaps the spider or insect as it gets to the bottom of the tube.
3 You can opt for a powered or a manual spider vacuum. The powered version usually takes a 9V or similar battery and contains a small motor to generate suction. Just remember to get a battery recharger so you always have your vacuum ready to go. Alternatively, choose a manual version where you use a bellows to generate suction on-demand, you just need a little arm power before it is charged up and ready to go.
4 The spider vacuum is multifunctional. As well as spiders, it can also be used for a wide variety of walking insect pests and some models claim to be able to suck up bees, wasps and other flying pests as well.
